1. Reflecting on Of Mice and Men
Explain George's perspective for what he did to Lennie.
I think that George didn't want Lennie to suffer so he killed him. George didn't want Lennie to hurt Curley like when he broke his hand. George didn't want Lennie to suffer when Curly found them because Curley was gonna make him feel pain.
b. Do you think that was the best thing to do for Lennie?
That was not the best thing to do for Lennie. George could have ran with Lennie and could have put him in a special institution. George could have also left with Lennie and ran away where Curly couldn't find him.
2. Father in Italy Accused of Murder
a. Explain the father's reasons for what he did.
The father pulled the plug on her daughter. Her dad did that because she was in a vegetative state for 17 years. he waited too long for her to come back or to wake up so he pulled the plug.
b. Do you agree or disagree with what the father did? Why?
I would agree with the father actions. I would do the same thing that the father did because it was too long to wait and he already waited for 17 years so he no choice.
3. Man Kills Family after Losing his Job
a. Imagine and list things that might have been going through the father's mind as he contemplated his "mercy" killing. (In the article, the father's suicide note gives specific evidence of why he did what he did. Elaborate on it.) Specifically, what could he have been negative or paranoid about?
The father was paranoid about losing his job because he thought he wouldn't have money to support his family. He must of been thinking should i do it or not should i keep my family in the streets. He also thought I don't want to Keep my children in the streets.
b. Unfortunately, with America's failing economy, many professionals are losing their jobs. While many do not resort to something as extreme as the man in the article, it does cause stress within families. What are some ways that parents can support children (to succeed in life) that do NOT require money?
The parents could have taken the kids to there aunts house or send them to some relative round where they live. They could have just taken them to some place where they all could stay together. The dad could have told some people in the neighborhood if they could help him out finding a job.
4. After reading Of Mice and Men and the two news articles, what is your stance on euthanasia? Is "mercy" killing a legitimate way to ending someones life? List any exceptions, if you have any. (This response should be 7-10 sentences).
After reading both things i thought to myself that mercy killing wasn't bad for George to do what he did for Lennie. People think that mercy killing is a bad thing to do for someone in a bad situation like Lennie was in. George had no other choice but to do what he did to Lennie. I think that is actions were still bad because he may have another choice instead of killing Lennie. I think that some people just over exaggerate about mercy killing they think that its a bad thing. In some situations it is bad because maybe they got a plan of how to make his life better instead of killing him/her
